A. Try skipping the top lace completely - rather than just lacing it looser. You can than lace your shoe securely without irritation. Odds are this should help a lot.
The tendons in front of your ankle can sometimes get irritated when the tongue continues up around the front of the ankle and is compressed by the laces. This can also impinge upon the nerves in this area with the result being on occasional numbness, but most often pain.
Of course other things can cause pain in this area, such as injuries to the ligaments or bones. If this simple solution doesn't work get it checked by a sports medicine practitioner.
