Heart Rate Predictors of Exercise Levels

Make sure that you are healthy enough to begin an exercise program. If you are over 40 or have had heart problems make sure you check with your physician regarding his recommendations. And of course the usual caveat: do not use this without your physician's guidance. Etc., Etc. And of course as a famous Vulcan said "Live Long And Prosper."

Predicted effort levels at various heart rates:

Usually, for healthy individuals, training should take place at the 70% to 85% level.

The assumption here is 205 - age/2 for predicted maximum heart rate (MHR) of healthy males. For women the calculation would be 211-Age/2. The difference between the two calculations is in my opinion practically speaking insignificant and within the realm of individual human differences. (But of course it is statistically significant).
