- Say No To Netscape - Well, it used to be Fight The Power Long Live Netscape, No To MSBS Explorer. But, Mark left, Serial Capitalist Jimbo made big bucks, bailed out, the stock sank.......AOL bought the product, and made it suck. Well, the reality is that now Netscape 6.1 is not bad. So this site is behind the times, and put up by someone who never saw Mosaic, never saw the first version of Netscape, and was probably in diapers at that time. Netscape 6.1 conforms better to the CSS-2 rules (for style sheets) and does a better job at it then MS Explorer.

But, after trying the disaster that was Netscape 6 and 6.01, I have not yet installed it on all of my systems. I'm still using Explorer 99.9% of the time. The interface is still really ugly in NS 6.1, but it is fast, doesn't crash like 6 and 4.72 and all of you 4.xx level Netscape users should upgrade right now! What are you waiting for?

Experts Say Cipro Overuse Could Lead to Problems The news and experts are catching up to reality. Long term antibiotic prophylaxis is very likely to cause harm itself. Daschle reported on Ted Koppel's show tonight he will be taking Cipro for 60 days. That would appear to indicate his tests were positive for exposure to Anthrax. He denied making the statement that the Anthrax found in his office was "weapons grade".

Anthrax Scares Nation Into Testing Thousands have been tested and only 5 people have actually been infected. And a few dozen exposed. Humans have a high immunity to Anthrax and it is hard to become infected. Antibiotic related illness could start to sweep the country as people start their 5 to 60 day prophylaxis programs. This is a very real danger.

HHS on Anthrax. Short q&a.

Fine article on Anthrax from Journal of The American Medical Association, 1999

:: S. Anon 10:58 PM [+] ::
...

According to the Washington Post, Anthrax policy and statements are confused. They are correct. After watching Senator First, a former physician, interviewed on Bioterrorism and saying he didn't know anything about Anthrax until recently and didn't see a picture of Smallpox until 2 months ago, I wondered if he was an FMG.

Wash Post. Oct. 17, 2001:

Consider the question of what type of anthrax was sent to Daschle's office. On Tuesday Daschle called it "a very strong form of anthrax, a very potent form of anthrax that was clearly produced by someone who knows what he or she is doing." One senator said the bacterium was characterized at a briefing as "weapons grade."

Asked to elaborate at a news conference yesterday, Daschle (D-S.D.) said: "I don't think I used the word 'weapons grade.'‚" Sens. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) and Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) said they were told it was "garden-variety" anthrax.

That message was quickly contradicted by House Minority Leader Richard A. Gephardt (D-Mo.), who said the exposure of the strain to some 30 Senate staffers "led the people who have looked at this to believe it is a higher grade, weapon-grade kind of anthrax."

House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), at Gephardt's side, called it "sophisticated."

Thompson, at a hearing, declared that "we do not know the exact strains or where it comes from." Just to be sure, he said a moment later: "Senator, I wanted to correct something that – I guess somebody sent me a note. I did not in any way imply that there is countries behind this attack on Daschle and that it's weapons grade."

:: S. Anon 10:54 PM [+] ::
...

Is the Anthrax found in the senate run of the mill, found in the ground Anthrax or "weapons grade". Since there has never been seen an anthrax weapon, what is weapon's grade Anthrax? Would that include Anthrax that 31 people were exposed to, but that no one got sick from? Sounds like the good old textbook statement that humans are relatively immune to Anthrax (Harrison's Internal Medicine) holds true for the Daschle office Anthrax. In the meantime, Maureen Dowd should probably take a few days or perhaps weeks off. She has been in a tizzy for her last few columns and now says she is typing wearing black leather gloves rather then latex. Cool she is into leather, but still all freaked out. Time to chill. A column or so ago she was busy trying to stock up on Cipro.

Genetic Markers On Anthrax Strains of anthrax can be identified. The host animals can also be identified by genetic analysis. If the Anthrax has been genetically altered this can be seen also. It is likely that sources of the infections will be traced. But this will not be done overnight. But, perhaps quicker then the demented bio-terrorists suspect. It may not be of middle eastern origin. Time will tell.

Anthrax More Anthrax today. Governer Pataki's NY Office, 25+ exposures to Anthrax in Daschle's office. Pataki and staff will take Cipro, depleting the supply, even though no individual in the office was found to have been exposed to it or have evidence of spores in their nostrils. Pataki reassured everyone he feels fine. If he takes Cipro for long enough, without reason, he will soon have diahrrea and not feel so fine.... Prophylaxis without evidence of exposure is controversial.

N.B. Previous post referring to U. Wisconsin lecture notes on Anthrax at: http://www.bact.wisc.edu/microtextbook/disease/anthrax.html is now of significantly less value. The professor is now telling us how to open our mail and sending us to the CDC for details on the disease. His previous summary, if I recall correctly divided anthrax into 3 main types:

  1. Cutaneous

  2. GI

  3. Pulmonary

Cutaneous requires spores to enter through a hole in the skin. A cut, blister, abrasion. G.I. requires ingestion of infected animal meat. Pulmonary requires the inhalation of 5,000 or more spores. Cutaneous may be recognized by the mark left behind (see CDC). It is readily cured by antibiotics. Pulmonary is extremely difficult to contract. Those who are testing positive for "exposure" are not actually sick, spores have been found in their nose. Antibiotics are actually not of much help, unless you are actually sick or infected with the disease.

This is another reason to just toss your junk mail. Why bother...

If Iraq and Saddam is found to be linked to Anthrax. He will have a large problem. The Guardian Observer reports some feel Saddam is linked to the U.S. Anthrax exposures.

USPS Post Office Guide To Suspicious Mail The following was said to be an authoritative guide to handling and identifying suspicious mail (via Poynter):

Some typical characteristics Postal Inspectors have detected over the years, which ought to trigger suspicion, include parcels that may:

• Be unexpected or from someone unfamiliar to you.
• Be addressed to someone no longer with your organization or otherwise outdated (e.g., improper title).
• Bear no return address, or one that can't be verified as legitimate.
• Be of unusual weight, given its size, or be lopsided.
• Be marked with restrictive endorsements, such as "Personal" or "Confidential."
• Exhibit protruding wires, strange odors, or stains.
• Exhibit a city or state in the postmark that doesn't match the return address.

What should I do if I've received a suspicious parcel in the mail?

• Do not try to open the parcel, as they are usually designed to withstand handling while in the mail, and to explode when opened or when an item is removed.
• Isolate the parcel.
• Evacuate the immediate area.
• Call a Postal Inspector to report that you've received a parcel in the mail that may be a bomb.

What should I do if I receive an anthrax threat by mail?

• Double bag the letter or package in zipper-type or zip-lock type plastic bags using latex gloves, if possible, and a particulate mask.
• Wash your hands with soap and water.
• Notify your immediate supervisor and local police, Postal Inspectors, and the FBI, who will arrange to collect the letter or the threat and assess the threat situation.
• Notify the local, county, and state health departments.
• Notify the state emergency manager.
• Ensure that all persons who have touched the letter wash their hands with soap and water.
• List all persons who have touched the letter and/or envelope with locating and contact information and provide the list to appropriate people.
• Place all items worn at the time in plastic bags and keep them wherever you change your clothes and have them available for law enforcement, should they request them.
• Shower with soap & water.
• Take medication until otherwise instructed or it runs out.
• Notify Center for Disease Control (CDC) Emergency Response at (770) 488-7100 for any questions or if you require further information.

Steganography: Hidden Messages
One of the first uses of Steganography was to create digital watermarks to help identify images. Hidden messages in computer images and other files soon followed. This is not new, but it is popular and many shareware and freeware programs exist to do this. Steganography comes in two flavors: linguistic and technical. We are primarily looking at technical programs that run on computers, although "invisible ink" is a previous version of technical steganography. The FBI and regional and international legal authorities are well aware of these techniques and are able to crack them. The problem is locating the proper files for them to crack. The list above should hopefully be in their hands and those even remotely concerned with anti-terrorism should familiarize themselves with how they work.

Does steganography exist in Shakespeare? How about the best seller book "The Bible Code"?

The author of JSteg Shell says that over the past few years people downloaded about 5 - 10 copies of his program per day. Since Sept 11, 2001, he reports that more then 1,000 curiosity seekers and others have downloaded his freeware product daily. It does not run under Windows 2000, but will run under previous versions of windoze, since it is a dos based program. The windows version is a shell that calls the dos program. The features include:

  • You start out with a JPG picture, You get a JPG picture.
  • The name of a hidden file can be saved and recovered.
  • The data file can be compressed with (Win)RAR 2.04.
  • The information can be encrypted before being hidden. The encryption algorithm is RC4-40.
  • JSteg Shell does not force you to do anything you don't want to do. (I know this is important to me)
  • You are not FORCED to include the filename in the data being "stegged" , You are not FORCED to use compression, You are not FORCED to use encryption

The Plot Sickens Florida Inquiry Finds Anthrax in Third Person After years, months, and intensified recent announcements by the government, the fear mongers have succeeded in terrorizing the American Public with fear of Biowarfare. The person reported in this case worked in the same building as the other two who had anthrax contamination. Of the three only the first had an outright infection of anthrax. This individual is not sick, but is taking the appropriate antiobiotics to treat it in case there is an undetectable infection present, rather than a limited nasal contamination of spores. Colds can spread by keyboards, wet surfaces, and shaking hands much more readily then Anthrax. Wash your hands before touching your face.....

The Secretary for the Florida Department of Health now seeks to reassure the terrified public that anthrax was not contagious and that the contamination appears to be limited to the headquarters of the American Media Inc., building here, where the three people worked.

What is terrorism? Terrorism is a deliberate attack in which those attacked are not the true targets of the attack. For example killing random people, women, children, non-military targets, civilians in an effort to create fear among a population while the real target is the military or government of those attacked. Assassination targets the preferred victim for reasons that are usually revealed before or after the attack. In both war and assasination innocent victims are killed but they are not ordinarily and should never be deliberate targets of attack. The UN has more material on terrorism. Let's end terrorism as soon as possible and get back to working on peace.

Fears of Anthrax and SmallpoxAfter spending much time scaring the ### out of everyone the New York Times has an editorial to soothe fears on anthrax and small pox. The problem is that it is an editorial and not a front page story. This editorial includes the amusing phrase "Before worrying themselves sick, people should realize that the likelihood of a biological attack by terrorists is remote"

They admit that the truth is that in view of the extreme difficulties of both acquiring and dispersing organisms a biological attack is REMOTE. Smallpox was noted to be an especially unlikely threat, as we have already stated here. Anthrax was also noted to be both unlikely and hard to deliver. "the chance that it would affect an enormous number of people seems extremely small."

The proper conclusion was reached by the Times editorial which is a chance occurance in and of itself: ".....demand that the government improve its intelligence capabilities and implement rational health policies that strengthen the nation's ability to cope with severe outbreaks of disease, whether natural or manmade."

Anthrax: I am not a wool worker living in the middle ages. I do not fear anthrax, the plague, or smallpox. Men with small minds with large complaints carrying bombs or automatic weapons are a problem. In fact these same people carrying box openers on airplanes can be a greater problem.

"There is no evidence of person-to person transmission of Anthrax. Quarantine of affected individuals is not recommended." One of the modes of transmission of Anthrax is by inhalation of spores. This requires a considerable concentration. Experts differ on whether crop dusters can provide a sufficient volume dispersing over a large area. Experts agree that a crop duster operating in a small hanger would generate enough to infect people inside that hanger.

CBS: Comments On Bioterrorism: This online article, 48 Hours: Bioterrorism Worries on Rise, has a scary title to attract attention by sensationalism, but actually takes the other side and mirrors what I've already said here and have said for a long time. Of course you'll continue to hear the scary stuff every day.

"....terrorism expert Smithson says if you’re going to worry, worry about the familiar.

“Terrorists use the weapons they know best, “ she says. “ Time and time again, what do they return to: bombs, bombs, bombs - truck, pipe, boat, and now they’ve turned commercial jetliners into bombs. This whole business about chemical or biological agent - they’ve got a huge learning curve to scale there.”

"In fact, experts say you are more likely to get hit by lightening than you are to be the victim of a chemical or biological attack."

“It’s not like going into your kitchen, grabbing something out of the freezer, sticking it in the microwave and punching a button, says terrorism expert Amy Smithson, who has written a book on the subject.

“This is tough science. A bunch of guys running around from cave to cave in the Afghani desert, I sincerely doubt, are going to be able to crack this one.”

"Fanning the frenzy is the government, which has formed a bioterrorism task force, sped up some vaccine production, asked for $1 billion dollars to counter the threat.…and then told people to relax."
